Notes Left Behind - The Lessons Our Children Teach Us

Yesterday, someone posted a link to a news story about a little girl, Elena Desserich, who while dying of brain cancer took the time to write love letters and leave them hidden for her parents to find when she was gone.  The story moved me to tears for a multitude of reasons.  First of all, the tragedy of losing a child–a parent’s worst nightmare.  I can’t think of anything worse to face in life.  Then there’s the scary monster - Cancer.  It’s frightening enough to think of battling cancer as an adult, let alone watching your child battle it.  As a parent, what you want most is to protect your child from any and all harm, but how do you protect them from cancer?   My heart and Love go out to all families who are forced to face the scary reality of such an illness.  I have to say, what moved me most to tears about this story was Elena’s gentle, loving spirit.  Think about how big this baby girl’s heart was–facing such a crippling illness and STILL be thinking about her Mommy and Daddy.  Obviously, her loving Spirit lives on and continues to touch people’s lives.

It is my belief that children come to teach us more than we can ever teach them.  They teach us about patience, humility, and unconditional Love.  What unwaivering courage and selfless nature this little girl owned!  It’s amazing how much these little souls can teach us if we take the time to listen and learn. Since her passing, Elena’s parents have turned Elena’s drawings and writings left behind into a book that tells her story.  It is titled NOTES LEFT BEHIND.  A portion of the book’s proceeds goes towards THE CURE STARTS NOW

After reading this story, I couldn’t help but think of a piece written by artist, poet, and writer Khalil Gibran.  It’s a beautiful reminder to parents that children are Souls sent here with a purpose and unique journey–all of which are their own and have nothing to do with us.  As much as we like to take full credit and ownership over them they truly are, as Kahlil Gibran says, “Life’s longing for itself.”  I believe Elena is proof of that.

Many blessings of Peace.Love.Joy.Abundance to the Desserich Family.  I thank them for sharing their story with the public.   Most of all, much Love to the precious little Soul and Teacher of Love - Elena.  Thank you, thank you, thank you.

On Children
Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts,
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them,
but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children
as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might
that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let our bending in the archer’s hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Thank you for Showing Me Love! (Katy Custom Photographer, Katy Kids Festival)

Yesterday was the Katy Kids Festival at the Villagio in Katy, TX.  I had a GREAT time meeting the community.  I want to thank everyone who stopped by my booth to introduce themselves.  I was thrilled with the turnout.  I had a lot of fun meeting everyone and snapping some shots of the cuties who came by my booth.  All I can say is Katy is FULL of beautiful souls.  I was also delighted to see past clients come by and show support.  Thank you for the love!

Originally, I announced that I would run a blog contest and having everyone vote on one little soul to win a complimentary session.  I promise you, I am a woman of my word, but this time I had to make a change from what I originally said.  As the day went on and the cuties filled my booth, I knew it would be impossible for me to narrow it down to only four individuals.  So, I made the executive decision that the most diplomatic and fair thing to do was to raffle off the session.   Everyone has a fair shot at winning this way.  The winner of the session will be notified via email tonight and their session will be featured in the future on the blog.  Below you’ll see some of the beautiful souls that came by my booth and you’ll see why it would be so hard for me to narrow it down to four.  They’re all gorgeous!

Again, thank you so much for everyone that came by to support me and to show love.  It was a pleasure meeting the community and catching a Glimpse of your Soul.

Beauty AND Brains (High School Senior Photography, Sugar Land, TX, Katy, TX)

Today I had the opportunity to shoot this gorgeous young lady.  What I loved about her is that not only is she beautiful, she is incredibly smart.  Photographing her made me think of my own daughter.  It made me hope that one day my little ladybug will grow up to be as comfortable in her skin as she.  Beauty AND Brains–the whole package.  Best of luck to you with your future, Sweet Girl.  The world is yours!

Searching for SupaWoman

supawoman

“Everywhere I’m turning nothing seems complete.  I stand up and I’m searching for the better part of me.” - Alicia Keys (SuperWoman)

Believe it or not, I’m not an optimistic person by nature.  I would hardly even consider myself an optimist–but I desperately would like to evolve into one.  I do, however, strive to surround myself with positive messages, energy, and people in the hopes that they will rub off on me.  I’m a big believer in The Golden Rule, Karma, the idea that “what you give is what you get,” so you’ll often find me bombarding you with positive daily inspirational messages.  I’ll let you in on a little secret though.  Those are often the days that I am feeling the lowest; the days I need uplifting the most.  My goal is when I put it out there, it will boomerang on back to me.  To my delight, 99.9% of the time it works.  It’s funny how life works.

One day, I was sweeping my kitchen, complaining (in my mind) about all the things I had to do, going over and over in my mind about how “tough” I had it that day.  I was focused on all the stresses and challenges going on in my life.  Then like a bolt of lightning, something told me I was being petty and reminded me of what I had seen a few days before.  I remembered seeing a story about an incredible woman (gorgeous woman) who had been hit by a drunk driver and suffered severe burns to her entire body.  Her face and body were completely disfigured and everyday she lived with pain.  What struck me the most was when she went onto say that she only allowed herself 5 minutes everyday to feel sorry for herself and then that was it.  She’d move on with her day and LIVE.  The kicker? She said she felt “blessed” to still be alive because she knew she had  been spared for a reason.  All of this got me to thinking about all the other SupaWomen out there–women among us who who face incredible challenges in their lives and face them head-on with courage, grace, and determination;  women who strap that cape on every morning and refuse to give up in the face of adversity; women who ARE afraid, but who push through the fear and achieve miracles.  I want to get to know them.

So, the search for SupaWoman has begun and I’m going to need YOUR help.  Tell all your family and friends to help me find her because I want to celebrate her.  I want everyone to meet her and hear her story. Specifically, I am searching for women (in the Greater Houston Area) who have battled or are currently battling breast cancer with amazing courage, grace, and strength.  I want to share SupaWoman’s story on my blog and I want to celebrate her.

The featured SupaWoman will receive a complimentary Glimpse of Soul Photography Session along with all her images.  She will also have a professional makeup artist (who has done work for runway models, reality TV shows, and the Houston Rockets dancers) do her makeup before the session to simply enhance her natural God-given beauty.  (I want her to feel at her very best and own her beauty that day.)  Above all else, I want to capture a Glimpse of her Soul.  Finally, because SupaWoman has overcome so much, she deserves to be pampered.  For this reason, Mr. Mike Sellers, owner of Cinco Ranch Spa in Katy, TX (www.cincospa.com) has graciously donated a gift certificate so SupaWoman can be pampered at his fabulous spa!

If you’d like to help me, email me at eliza@glimpseofsoulphoto.com.  You have this whole month to get the nominations in.  The recipient will be featured in November.  So start emailing me those nominations!
