P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)

Today’s beautiful high school senior may not know that this is a Michael Jackson song from the 80’s.  I was talking to her about music at the session and realized I AM OFFICIALLY OLD!  ;-)  At the risk of sounding old again, I had to use this title because I felt it perfectly described her!  Some of you may have to visit YouTube after reading this post.  :-)

I had a GREAT time photographing her this afternoon.  She was accompanied by her lovely mother who looked more like her sister!  I was amazed at this young girl’s talent, intelligence, and beauty.  I only wish I would have been as confident and poised as she is when I was her age.  I enjoyed learning about how she TAUGHT HERSELF how to play guitar and what her plans are for the future.  Aww, to be young again and have the world at your hands.  It’s such an exciting time.  Enjoy it!

And thank you again, P.Y.T., for allowing me to capture your beautiful spirit.  May you follow your dreams and fullfill your greatest desires.  With that wonderfully supportive and loving Mom at your side, the sky is the limit!

“Hey, Bruhdah…”

web403182010

“Bruhdah…hey, Bruhdah,” that’s how my 6-year old calls out for his “bruhdah” aka “brother.”  He’s been calling him that since he was 3 and I imagine he’ll always refer to him this way.  It makes me smile each time I hear him.

This afternoon I had the chance to spend some time with these handsome young men who are brothers/best friends.  It was funny to watch them tease each other and joke around.  I felt like I was catching a glimpse of how my boys will be in the future.  I realized that the dynamics of big brother/little brother never really change–older brother taunts younger brother, younger brother gets annoyed–all in good fun.  And beneath all the teasing, you can see the strong bond. As a mother of boys, when I think of the brotherly bond it gives me comfort to know that they will forever have each other, that they have a best friend for life, someone who will always have their back.   What an incredible gift!  Thank you, Fellas, for allowing me to capture memories of this awesome bond you share.

Mom, you “done” good. ;-)

Friends…How Many of Us Have Them? {Katy Custom Photographer}

If you’re a lover of Hip Hop then you’ll remember the song I’m referring to in my title.  It’s titled FRIENDS and it’s by Whodini.  The song asks, “Friends–how many of us have them?  Friends–ones we can depend on?”  For me, the connection between family and friends is ESSENTIAL to an abundant life.  What I’ve come to know is that people have different definitions of “friendship” - different categories of “friends.”  I am really slow to categorize someone as a “friend” because I know not everyone can fit my definition.  I’ve been burned a few times in the past  so now I am more concerned with quality vs. quanity.   The people in my life I consider friends are loyal, trustworthy, honest (sometimes, brutally honest), humble, family-oriented, kind-hearted, and they give as much as they receive.  My life is enhanced by their presence–not drained.  They are the type of people who in an emergency  I can call at 2 AM and they’ll be there for me in a heartbeat–without hesitation or questions asked.  They are the type of people I call on to surround me when I celebrate life - birthdays, anniversaries, holidays - or just an afternoon lunch with the kids.  They are the type of people who will drive from Florida to Texas for a 3-day weekend to celebrate her best friend’s daughter’s birthday!  Her best friend will then in turn, without being asked,  throw a birthday party  for her visiting best friend’s son who is turning 5.  Those are the kind of people I am FRIENDS with - my beloved Amigas.

I was overjoyed this past weekend to photograph my friend’s son who is turning 5.  It’s such a monumental birthday–he’s officially moved into the “Big Boy” category.  It’s such a privilege for my camera and I to witness and capture this special moment in time.  I also had a chance to capture a few shots of his sugary sweet baby sister (one of the sweetest souls I know).  While we were wrapping up the session, I couldn’t help but get a few shots of my friend.  She has such a beautiful, kind spirit and has one of the biggest hearts of anyone I know.  I hope you can see that spirit radiate through her genuine, infectious smile and honest, generous eyes.    She’s that quiet person standing in the back who asks for no recognition, who gives her heart totally and without hesitation, but who never expects or wants anything in return.  Doesn’t she make gorgeous babies?

I had a beautiful weekend filled with family, friends, opportunities to create memories, strengthen bonds, to witnesses and take part in the fleeting moments that make up this wonderful ride called “Life.” I have a neighbor who I love dearly and who says it best.  Every time I see and greet her, I stop and ask, “Hey, Ms. Sandra, how ya doing?”  Without fail, she always responds in this strong southern accent that I so love, “I’m blessed and highly favored by the LAWWWWWD.” It makes me smile every…single… time because I know exactly what she meansHaving people in your life who you love and who love you back is the ultimate blessing.

Happy Birthday, Spiderman.  *Love You*

Cupcakes Make This World a Better Place

Okay, so you’ve seen this cutie patootie here before.  A little back story, I met her and her mother when I was portfolio-building–seems like forever ago.  Soon after meeting them, I found that Mom & I had a lot in common and we hit it off.  I didn’t just have a new client, I had a new friend!  Fast-forward a couple of years later and our families have become like family.  So, I now have the privilege of photographing this princess as she continues to bloom through the years.

When Mom & I sat down to discuss the theme of the session I knew it had to be something to reflect this beautiful girl’s nature.  Nothing could represent her sugary sweetness better than cupcakes!  So, she indulged in cupcakes while Mom proudly watched on & I got to capture the magic of a little girl growing more quickly than Mommy & Daddy would like.  Happy 5th Birthday, Cupcake!

Peace, Love, Joy & Abundance!

We Are Family!

Katy has had a lot of gray weather lately!  I was so happy to see the sun come out recently.  It’s been a LONG winter!  I grew up in IL where overcast tends to be the norm, but after living in TX for 17 plus years, I consider myself a sunshine girl!

I’m excited about all the Spring Sessions coming up.  You’re going to be seeing a lot of new Soul Searchers as well as some loyal return Soul Searchers.  I appreciate all of you!

I started my Spring Season with a  family that is near & dear to my heart.  They are New Yorkers who now call the Lone Star state their home.  No matter where they live, family always comes first for them, so it was my delight to capture all the love between them.

Don’t these girls just make you giggle with glee?

Peace, Love, Joy & Abundance!!!
